Highlight: The Mustard Seed

Seed: In the last post, we talked about how it is crucial to plant good soil for the seed to grow.  Sometimes, we are the farmer who can sow seeds of the Gospel in the hearts of others when we interact with them. In other times, we are the field by which God Himself sow greatness. In both cases, if the soil of the field is hard, nothing will grow.

The Mustard Seed

Scholars note that it is odd to call a mustard a tree. The fact is it’s only grown to be a shrub. Jesus certainly did not make a mistake in his word choice. The people who were listening to him understood that mustard seeds don’t really grow into trees.

This metaphor implies that a mustard seed growing into a tree is unnatural and could not happen if agricultural laws apply.  

If you notice this, you’ll see Jesus’ warnings. There will be many churches and Christians that seem to grow unnaturally. While we can chalk this up to the supernatural grace of God, this can also mean that there are perversions in the way Christians and churches are produced.  Jesus wants to warn Christians about this unnatural way of being.

Shrub vs. Tree Potential

A shrub differs from a tree.  In the same way, the Holy Spirit develops a true Christian. This individual will differ from one who has a superficial faith. The Christian can live and make decisions by the grace of God. Conversely, the other who claims to be Christian is only borne out of good works and trivial human effort. Somehow, a part of us shrivels in discomfort when we enter a church or encounter a Christian that may appear God-honoring on the outside but is truly self-gratifying on the inside. Even the least discerning of us get uncomfortable around certain people because we know that the way they present themselves is fake and unnatural.  

The Lack of Authenticity in the Church

When watermelons grow naturally, they are oval in shape, full of seeds, and are covered by a green, striped outer skin. Yet these days, we will find watermelons that are square, seedless, and monochromic. These are unnatural, produced by the interference of human hands. While we enjoy eating a seedless watermelon for its convenience, watermelons were never really designed or created to be this way.

In the same way, some churches have become perverted when it comes to their doctrines, values, and objectives; thus, they take on a new nature – one that is not of God. They may identify as a church of Christ in the same way that the mustard tree is identified as something that stemmed from the mustard seed, but the way they present themselves and what makes them up differ. They grow because they placed their own hands in the process.  As a result, we will encounter churches with resounding accusations of secularism, manipulation, abuse, purposeful connection with authoritative figures to acquire power, and unnecessary extensive expenses on marketing and advertising.

The Risk of Disengagement

Despite these efforts, the megachurch has been constantly criticized for the sheer number of attendees per service would mean that there will be people who won’t get engaged or given enough attention.

Additionally, the setup of the worship service with a high stage and a large number of congregants can give off the impression of a concert.

Consequently, the attendees are mere spectators and faces in a crowd. Thousands more choose to attend for the thousands of people who choose to commit to the megachurch and get involved. They do so simply because they get to live in some anonymity. They cannot do that if they join a smaller church.

A large number of attendees attend each service. Therefore, some locations can host more than 5,000 people at a time. The multiple services run each weekend.

The majority of the people are scrambling out of the venue even before the service has ended. There isn’t really time to talk with friends afterward, nor can people loiter inside the hall because everyone has to be cleared out, and the room must be re-done completely within 15 minutes.

 Some consider megachurches’ worship time as mere experiential performances. Similar to rock concerts, the music team leads worship with fog machines and synchronized lights.

We are guilty of pointing a lot of fingers in the way of megachurches for their strict programs. The traditional churches would claim that these megachurches leave no room for the Holy Spirit.

Moreover,  they would accuse the megachurch of the “specularization” of something that is supposed to be sacred.

Is it too personality-driven?

A harsher criticism is that megachurches follow a largely questionable ideology. 

For instance,  megachurches are largely leader-driven, with one specific point person that most churches look up to.

This can be the senior pastor or the president of an organization of ministries. But while this leader is almost certainly of ministerial position, this leader is a minister who cannot attend to everything. Most attendees have probably never met the leader in person.

The purpose then of the leader is to embody a vision and get the members to act on this. The criticism for Christian celebrities is present. It adds to the seemingly impersonal setup of megachurch services. 

Opening Doors for More People

At the end of the day, megachurches have done their part in making ministries and discipleship available for all who attend. To balance out the distance between the senior minister and the general attendee, they have employed small groups, also known as Bible studies, care groups, or fellowship groups.

As a solution to the increasing number of attendees, the megachurch has chosen to empower its leaders and allow them the authority to shepherd and disciple their communities within these groups. In this context, they really get to build relationships with each other and discuss their personal problems, along with Biblical truths. Those who attend small groups are active members. Most megachurches make it a foundational requirement for volunteers and leaders. In this scenario, the small group leader then takes on the role of being a minister to his or her members.

PROTECTION

EVIDENCE OF GOD’S PROTECTION

EVIDENCE OF GOD’S PROTECTION: 

King Hezekiah began his independent reign when he broke the treaty which his father Ahaz made with the Assyrians (2 Kgs. 16:7), probably during the reign of Sargon II (722-705 B.C.). Sargon’s successor Sennacherib (705-681 B.C.) decided to bring Judah into line, and he led a campaign against Hezekiah in the king’s 14th year (2 Kgs. 18:13). Hoping to prevent Jerusalem’s capture, Hezekiah hid the city by concealing the outside water supplies (2 Chron. 32:3-4).

He also repaired any weak spots in the wall and built towers around it (1 Kgs. 9:24), and added to the weapon supply. He also mobilized the people under army officers. He encouraged them not to feat, but to trust the Lord — a power far superior to a nation like Assyria. Hezekiah assured the people that the Lord was with them to help them.

What was Hezekiah doing in the previous chapter? (Protection)

He was securing the tithes of the people and also making sure the priests are provided for and encouraging people to be consistent about their giving.

He took care of the priests — God’s workers. As a result, God protected Hezekiah’s reign and gave him victory.

In 2 Chronicles 32:9-15, Sennacherib boasted that no other god had been able to protect his people from the Assyrians. He was mocking the God of the Israelites, saying He was just another God. After his taunting through letters and addresses through his messengers, he would send delegates to speak in Hebrew on the wall to demoralize the people about their God.

Hezekiah took care of the provision for the priest. In return, the Lord protected him and his kingdom.

Hezekiah turned to the Lord with the Prophet Isaiah. With the help of the prophet, they prayed for divine deliverance. God gave the king assurance through the prophet (2 Kgs. 19:20-34). God sent an angel to destroy the Assyrian host forcing Sennacherib to retreat in humility (2 Chron. 32:20-21a). Hezekiah took care of the provision for the priest. In return, the Lord protected him and his kingdom. He upheld Hezekiah’s throne against the Assyrian army. This protection only comes from God.

PROTECTION

The Prophetic Word from the Book of Revelations

The New Testament prophet John wrote about a voice from coming from God’s throne, giving him a picture of the future and prophetic word. The same apostle also had the same encounter with God in the next verses. There is authority from the throne of God. With full authority, the author proclaimed, “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Based on this passage, we can take home four important points about the “spirit of prophecy” and “the prophetic word”. Jesus proclaimed an authoritative testimony and we must take notice. The voice in John’s vision speaks about Christ’s testimony — which refers to the testimonies given by Jesus or the testimony of believers about him. Mostly, we can observe how the “spirit of prophecy” causes believers to speak a word of testimony about Jesus.

Jesus preached (Lk. 4:43) about the kingdom of God. During his ministry on earth, he dealt with many aspects of this subject. He spoke of both redemption and of judgment. Those who believed in Jesus would be redeemed, while those who did not believe would face the harsh judgment of spiritual death. In addition to what Christ said, the entire life, death, and resurrection of Jesus proclaimed the truth of God.

The message of Jesus has an unmatched influence on humanity. Everyone everywhere must face the claims of the Son of God — it’s inevitable. Each of us has a choice to make, whether we accept or reject this message. The “spirit of prophecy” inspires us to make this significant choice, as we are called and predestined to be children of God.

Believers in Christ are witnesses of him. The “spirit of prophecy” causes us to proclaim the truth to people everywhere. It is this spirit that causes us to do this in a more powerful way, which is more intense and more effective than human capability. Every believer in Christ is called to witness. Our words and our lives tell the story of how Christ redeemed our lives.

Our lives give evidence to the transforming work of Christ who is the way, the truth, the prophetic word,  and the life. Sometimes, the witness of believers triggers opposition and persecution. Many people, today, face persecution and death because of “the testimony of Jesus.”

However, they keep proclaiming this by the power of the Holy Spirit. They can be bold and fearless in prophesying about the return of Christ because of this grace.

The main function of the Holy Spirit is to bear witness to Jesus. The Spirit does this by empowering believers to speak.

Take a Risk

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Roman 12:2

If you want to shrink something, you must first allow it to expand. If you want to get rid of something, you must first allow it to flourish. If you want to take something, you must first allow it to be given. This is called the subtle perception of the way things are. This is by Tao Te Ching. When you have big shoes to fill there is no going back. I heard your name in the spirit, and the spirit told me to tell you that your choice matters, it is a word that allows yes and the word that makes things possible. Your choices means taking risk and taking a leap of faith on the things that you want to do. Your choices will always matter in your life that is why you have to make sure of the things that you have to make. There are choices that will lead you into greater things.

I hear the word of the Lord say to choose you this day. For I set before you an opportunity to make choices that will be a game changer in your life saith the Lord. You are coming into a season that your choices will lead you into a new life, and you will find yourself facing new opportunities in the days that lie ahead saith the Lord. You will have the right to stand on your own feet, and you will begin to discover that the power of choice was the gift that I gave to you the moment you set foot on the planet. You have not always used this power wisely or been aware of the gift that I have given unto you. However, this is the day that I open up your eyes and cause you to discover the opportunity that is in your possession, and I will cause you through the power of your tongue to begin to behold a new picture that you will begin to design for your life saith the spirit of Almighty God.

You have the right and the capability to transform your life through the choices that you make. No matter when and what the circumstances, you have the capability to take risk and grab the opportunities that come your way. Sometimes it is just hard for you to make decisions or to choose on the choices that you have because you are afraid to take risks. You are afraid to jump on something that you do not see. Life is about taking chances and making choices. To be able to make decisions even if the choice that you have is hard to choose, take time to think and do not be impulsive and what you are going to do. Take full responsibility and be in charge of your life.

The preservation of integrity is something that not many people can do easily. However, when I thought of all you today, it was easy to write this message to you. I began to discover that the power of preservation lies within your ability to begin to feel the power of God within you moving you forward into a time that is ready to exist for you. Often times, people tend to say things they do not mean, or neglect to put much thought into their words and subsequent actions.

This is what makes integrity such a rare but admirable trait. All people want to be thought of as admirable, but not everyone is willing to commit to their word. In order to call yourself a person of high integrity, you must live up to moral codes, including the fulfillment of one’s promises.

It would help to keep in mind how your identity is tied to your integrity and your word. Knowing this, you will be more careful about the way you deal with others. I hear the word of the Lord saying that I am bringing you to a profound place in a position of great power. For this is the power you have prayed for and the place that you have longed to be. I the Lord your God are now awakening in you the power and the truth of your own word.

This will bring you to a new place of existence and cause you to stand in a new place of power in the earth saith the spirit of God. Everyone wants to like him or herself. If you want to be proud of who you are, become a person who is worth being proud of. Becoming someone you can admire starts woodworking on how well you can live up to the promises you’ve made both to other people and yourself. If someone breaks his or her promise, his or her credibility as a person is put into question. How can you make a stand for yourself when you do not even value your own word?

How can you become respectable if you have not learned to respect yourself by being true to what you say? Keeping a promise can be tricky for some people, however not for you. Even though this is something that is very important for any person’s sense of self, it is often taken for granted. You must remember how important your word is and how it should not be thrown around without care. Your breakthrough is about to come as you embrace proper thinking. Proper thinking is important in declaring who you are. When you do not have proper thinking, or you do not think about your actions then you will have a bad declaration, and bad situations will occur to yourself. You must not forget that you have a mind to think. You must always think about your actions and how will it affect the people around you as well as yourself.

Proper thinking leads you into right decisions, and you will reap the consequences.I hear the Lord saying that this is the hour that I am realigning your thinking and causing you to see things from a perspective that you have never viewed them before saith the Lord. Take time to observe yourself. If you feel that you are experiencing the same thing over and over again, then you must think of the things that you decide and do. You must think and observe the things that you do and take time to accept comments from people that will help you see the situation in a different perspective. Proper thinking can save you time and regrets about your decisions.

With proper thinking, you are able to see the decisions that made things easy for you. You will see the decisions that have bad results in your life. Take time to observe yourself and review your actions, with proper thinking you are likely to make right decisions. Proper thinking can save you from having regrets in your future, and you will see that you did not waste your time on something that will not bring good for you.

What is in your future?
How would you like your future to be like?

Was it a point in your life, when you were still unaware of what you want in the future?
Look back, and smile on perils past. The past is a term used to indicate the totality of events which occurred before a given point in time. Things of the past had already gone by or were already over. In essence anything that we may have or not have done in the past cannot be changed anymore.

Who we are in the pass, our actions, thoughts or words are part of the makeup of who we truly are, We cannot change the things which have already happened. What we have already said was said. What we have already done, good or bad, is done.

People with bad backgrounds are scared to accept the realities of the past. The past does not want to punish us because of what we have done. It is in fact a part of who we are and things in the present are just consequences of the action that we have done in the pass. Instead of running away from it, we should embrace who we truly are because of our pasts and it will be easy to correct our life in the present despite any mistake we may have done.

I hear the Lord saying you need not be ashamed of who you were in the pass. In fact every mistake, every heartbreak, every failure and suffering that you have experience has helped shape who you are now and now you are about to a far bigger and brighter future saith the Lord. What you need to do is look back in the past and learn from it saith the Lord. Get from it all the things you know you can use in living in building the life you are ordained to live today.

The past, because it has already been done, makes an imprint in our lives which we cannot completely erase. We can lessen the mark that we make or rewrite the ending of what we want to become no matter how what has been in the pass. Despite all misfortunes and misgiving, we are always given a second chance. Even in the Bible, God continues to give second chances. It is only through a deep understanding of ourselves and our pasts that can give us true freedom.

A Part of You

When we do something repeatedly it starts to become a part of who we are. If you consistently stick with a certain task. When we do something repeatedly it starts to become a part of who we are. If you consistently stick with a certain task so much so that it becomes almost automatic to you, then you have turned that act into a habit.   It is important to create good habits and practice them. Your daily actions and decisions determine the direction your life is heading towards. The power of prophecy allows you to get prophetic direction by giving you guidance through God’s words.

On the other hand if you do a good deed today but continue your bad habits tomorrow, then your single good trait cannot count as a habit. You must be committed to the habits of the kind of person you want to be. If you feel like doing behaving yourself for a day, let us say for example you choose to wake up early for that day, do not just leave it at that. Make good habits something you do everyday. In this way you will be honing the traits that lead you to excellence.

The Body Of Christ

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36 NIV).

The world defines freedom as a life without any restraint—“Do anything I want to do; say anything I want to say, without anybody telling me ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’” Like the song “My Way”: “Everybody got burned by me, but I did it my way!” “I left five marriages behind but I did it my way!” Total selfishness! “I had my freedom!” Yet, the Bible says the only way to true freedom is through Jesus: “If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free” (John 8:36 TEV).

Real freedom is freedom from fear, where you’re truly free from guilt, from worry, from bitterness, and from death. You’re free to quit pretending because you’re free to be yourself.

How do you get rid of those kinds of fears? By letting God love you! The apostle John teaches that, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18 NIV).

When you realize how much God loves you, you’ll begin to live in true freedom. In fact, you worship God when you recognize that “God is love.” It is an act of worship to agree that he is a loving, caring, generous God and that we can “rely on the love God has for us” (1 John 4:16 NIV).

As it was written in the Scriptures, “Love God with your heart, with your soul, with your strength, and your mind.” God desires us to love like this. Hence, we must consider this as our main responsibility in life. Make God as your number one priority in your life.

Love is a wonderful feeling any person could ever experience. With this, everything may seem right; everything may appear to be perfect. Be always ready to love and receive love. Be always willing to let someone experience its magic. The power of prophecy can help you experience this kind of love.

Mastering Life
