FIFTH RIVER: DRAMA

The fifth river is the last and final river by which the “Spirit of prophecy” flowed in the Old Testament. The other two rivers flowed in the new. The fifth river is the river of drama or acting out the prophecy. This implication means Spirit of prophecy can flow through acts as well as through words.

 

The Prophet Ezekiel lived in Babylon during and after the time of Jerusalem’s destruction. He was in captivity while Jeremiah was in Jerusalem. In the account below, you’ll see Ezekiel, a man of God. One day, God tells him to go and build this siege. He went in the middle of this Babylonian captivity, and he started building a city. He was acting out the prophetic word. Imagine how God commanded him to lie on one side for 309 days.

“Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in

front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.

Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it,

build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it and

put battering rams around it. Then take an iron

pan, place it as an iron wall between you and the

city and turn your face toward it. It will be under

siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign

to the people of Israel.

“Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the

people of Israel upon yourself. You are to bear

their sin for the number of days you lie on your

side. I have assigned you the same number of days

as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will

bear the sin of the people of Israel.

“After you have finished this, lie down again, this

time on your right side, and bear the sin of the

people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a

day for each year. Turn your face toward the siege

of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against

her. I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot

turn from one side to the other until you have

finished the days of your siege.

“Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet

and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them

to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during

the 390 days you lie on your side. (Ezekiel 4:1-9)

 

In Isaiah 20:2, we see something similarly strange. The Lord spoke to Isaiah, to go and remove the sackcloth from his body and take off his sandals. He walked around naked and barefoot, which comes to show don’t make up any word of knowledge from the Lord. Even in Acts 11:27, we see prophets come from Antioch to Jerusalem. Agabus stood up and was led by the Spirit to say that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. If you read carefully the word “show,” the Holy Spirit meant to “act it out.” While there sure was spoken prophecy, there was a demonstration drama kind of prophecy that took place. The prophet dramatized something that would happen to Paul.

 

After we had been there a number of days, a

prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his

own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy

Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jewish leaders in

Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will

hand him over to the Gentiles.’” (Acts 21:10-11)

 

Moving in the prophetic and giving the word of God is an act of faith. When a prophet speaks forth the word, even though he doesn’t understand it, he knows it’s from God. If you ever move into the prophetic anointing, you realize that sometimes God shows you the person first and then give you the prophetic word. Sometimes, God gives a prophetic word then He shows you the person to give the prophecy to. There can be times when God moves you in the river of prophecy, God give you an action to do first, and then give you the understanding of the action. Thus, drama has been of the ways in which a prophet flows into.

FOURTH RIVER: ASSOCIATION

The Book of Second Kings 2 shows us the fourth river by which prophecy can flow from. Elijah was about to leave and Elijah who had been following him all these years was going to take over his position. We have discussed this account before wherein there was a group of people in 2 Kings 2:3, “The company of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, ‘Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?’”

 

These men were actually just sons of prophets. They seem to know something about what God is doing, yet they do not have authority, which was why Elisha told them to be quiet. During this time, they became like their fathers. They were able to prophesy.

 

These sons of prophets grew up seeing their fathers take the harp and sing praises to God from morning until evening. The sons of the prophets grew up in a prophetic environment. They grew up in this kind of atmosphere and they knew these prophets regularly. The sons’ association to the father allowed them to receive a prophetic impartation. Very soon, the children caught on into the prophetic river of association and fellowship.

 

Fellowshipping with the prophets allow prophetic flow to come into your life. When you invest time being with them, and just being mentored, the prophetic flow comes by association. Saul came in the presence of the prophets on the hill and he prophesied. He prophesied even when he was not anointed as a prophet. No one laid hands on him to receive this gift. The strength in the anointing of people allows you to move in the prophetic if you spend enough time with them. Prophets band together to strengthen the flow of the Spirit of prophecy in each other’s lives.

 

The gifts of God may flow through you, but they don’t bypass you. You deliver the prophetic word in the way you speak. It doesn’t change your identity. The same God can flow through different people with different personalities. However, if you have sin and things of the flesh present in your life, and you try to tap into the things of God, your nakedness will be revealed. Saul’s nakedness was revealed when he was exposed to the prophetic. There is an anointing that can come as a result of association and fellowship with the prophets, but it doesn’t mean you become clones of these leaders. God does not make you into clones. He makes disciples.

THIRD RIVER: MUSIC

The third river of prophecy flows through music. Music is one of the rivers by which a prophetic flow comes from. Nevertheless, prophecy can flow even without music, because there are six other rivers. However, one of the rivers of the Spirit of prophecy is music.

 

In other words, music creates a space by which prophecy can flow. Old and New Testament prophets are different from each other because not everyone has the Holy Spirit. The role and authority of the prophets have decreased in the New Testament because individual believers can receive a prophetic word from  God for themselves. In the book of First Samuel 10, there is an account of a group of  prophets prophesying about Saul and his future kingship. In Verse 10, when they came back to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet Saul. The Spirit of God came upon him and he prophesied among them—because he was in the presence of these prophets. What else was present?

 

The group of prophets were at the Philistines’ garrison, which Samuel called as the “hill of God.” It was the favorite meeting place for prophets during this time. It was so common to pass by the hill and hear the prophets playing musical instruments.

 

“After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where

there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach

the town, you will meet a procession of prophets

coming down from the high place with lyres,

timbrels, pipes and harps being played before

them, and they will be prophesying. (1 Samuel

10:5)

 

It was like a prophet band; a music team made out of prophets. The musical band of prophets, over which Samuel was the leader for, understood that in order to tap into the prophetic flow, there should be music. Music does something to a person’s soul. It opens up a person’s spirit, not necessarily to prophecy (e.g. creativity or inspiration), but it is one of the flows that can open up to you.

 

When Elisha was asked for a word from the Lord, what did he do? He asked for a musician to be brought to him (2 Kgs. 3:15). When the musicians were playing, the hand of the Lord came upon Elisha and he prophesied. This instance was the time when there was a fight going on and the king of Judah asked if there was a prophet whom they can seek a word from. Elisha said yes, but he asked for musicians first. It was understandably difficult to organize a band in the desert, but somehow, they were able to comply. Elisha tapped into the prophetic river and he prophesied.

 

King David was also a musician himself. He always sang. He sang even when he was sad. As a result, he tapped into the river of prophecy. In Acts 2, the author called David a prophet. David had a secondary call. Aside from being called to kingship, he was also called a prophet.

 

In Acts 2, Peter quoted a prophetic word from the Book of Psalms. In fact, the book of Isaiah and the book of Psalms are the most quoted books in the New Testament because they are full of Messianic prophecies. In Acts 2: 29-30, Peter said, “Men and women let me speak free to you of the Patriarch David that he is both dead and buried and his tomb is with us to this day.Therefore, being a prophet.” David tapped into the prophetic flow through his music. There were things he sang about in his psalms that he did not fully understand, but he indeed moved in the prophetic.

Opening the Prophetic Flow

  1. In your room, put praise music on.
  2. Allow yourself to listen and flow in the music.
  3. Pray in the Spirit as you listen and sing along to the praise and worship song. If you play a musical instrument, join along.
  4. Ask God for a prophetic word. Speak this prophetic word.
  5. Write down what impression, vision, or message God has given to you.

SECOND RIVER: ESTABLISHED LEADERSHIP

The second river of prophecy flows through established leadership, or a position of authority in the Body of Christ. This person is placed in an office that gives him access to a different level in the prophetic realm. He taps into it correctly, and unintentionally, like a high priest, similar to what we see in John 11. Caiaphas uttered a prophetic word, not because he believed in Jesus, but because he was in a position of authority. Caiaphas was not a man who was filled with the Holy Spirit. He did not understand or believe in Jesus. However, he was in a position that Jesus and God recognized when it comes to the nation of Israel.

 

Even though the organized Jews did not accept Jesus Christ, Jesus did not oppose them. When the lepers were healed, Jesus even instructed them to go and show themselves to the priest. Jesus respected the authority of the office of the temple in his time. Being a high priest, by virtue, allowed him to tap into a river of prophecy.

 

You do not understand that it is better for you

to have one man die for the people than to have

the whole nation destroyed.” He did not say this

on his own, but being high priest that year he

prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the

nation, and not for the nation only, but to gather

 into one the dispersed children of God. (John 11:50-52, emphasis added)

 

 

As the high priest, he was anointed for that moment to speak out what was going to unfold. He may not have intended it the way God intended it to happen; for Jesus to die for the salvation of the entire nation and humanity, and that Jesus would resurrect from the dead. From his perspective, it was either Jesus goes, or the Jewish nation would go. Nevertheless, John recorded his statement and recognized a prophetic flow, coming from the position of the high priest as noted in the emphasis given in the passage above. Caiaphas prophesied about the death of Jesus on the cross. His motivation and purpose for uttering the prophecy was different from what it was supposed to be; nevertheless, this prophecy came forth, and it flew from the river of established leadership.

 

When you are in a particular church and you are given authority, you are in a position to receive a prophetic word regarding your church. This is true regardless of what others think of you or whether others agree with your word. You are actually obligated to follow this prophetic flow, along with other people in the church, whether you like it or not.

 

If you are not a member of church leadership, do no prophesy in public. First, write down your prophetic word and submit it under church authority. Let them do what they want with it. Your duty as a prophet and as a member of the Body of Christ is done.

Your responsibility is not to overtake your leaders. Apostles and prophetic leaders establish leaders in the local church for a reason. A position of leadership is not established overnight. It takes years for a person to be in an established position of leadership for a reason—access to this level of the prophetic realm.

FIRST RIVER: EXPERIENCE OF JOY

The first channel or river is the spiritual experience of joy. A prophetic word, more often than not, in the New Testament church bring joy to the hearer of the prophecy. Whether it is a corporate prophecy or a personal prophecy, most prophetic words give joy to the believer. It lifts up their spirits, and their inner core are touched. In the same way, the experience of joy can also move a person to prophesy. The Spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus, and so the prophet can move into this prophetic element. In the Bible, Hannah experienced great joy that her prayers were answered (1 Sam. 2). She is filled with joy and gratitude to the Lord, after all her years of crying before the Lord to have a baby. God heard her cry and gave her a son named Samuel. Hannah is filled with the joy of the Lord (1 Sam 2:1). When Hannah was praying to God, she moved into a prophetic space, because of this great joy. Her prophetic word came from the first river—the experience of joy.

“My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God.My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory. (1 Samuel 2:1)

 

Hannah was not a prophet. She was a godly mother. A person does not need to be a prophet to move into the Spirit of prophecy, as we’ve covered in the chapter dedicated to this level of prophecy. As a prophet, one could move into the levels that are stronger. Since Hannah was not a prophet, she can only move into the lower levels of prophecy, but she was able to tap into one of the channels of the rivers of prophecy because of her joy in the Lord.

In the first verse, Hannah said that her joy in the Lord allows her to smile at her enemies, which is not something a person can normally do. In the chapter before this, Hannah was crying because she was so sad with her case. However, God turned her mourning into joy. In this moment, her heart was overflowing with joy for the Lord’s grace upon her life. She says she can smile at her enemies because she has experienced the goodness of God. In the same way, believers can prophesy in the Spirit of prophecy when God answers their prayers or when they become a recipient of God’s mercy and grace. In great joy, mouths can open up in prophecy.

 

The Lord! His adversaries shall be shattered;

 the Most High will thunder in heaven.

The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;

 he will give strength to his king,

 and exalt the power of his anointed.” (1 Samuel 2:10)

 

 

In verse 10, Hannah moved into the height of prophecy. She is prophesying how God will give strength to His king and exalt the horn of His anointed. How do you think Hannah knew that a king was going to come? During her time, there were no kings, only judges. She moved into the river of prophecy in her experience of joy in God. She prophesied what her son would do, anoint the first king of Israel, Saul. Hannah was able to flow in the first river of prophecy, and out of her lips she declared things that probably did not even make sense ever to her.

 

Hannah prophesied of a coming king and how her son, Samuel would anoint the first one. Samuel was the last judge in Israel. Through him, Israel transitioned from having judges to having kings. Hannah did not hold any spiritual office, but she spoke a prophetic utterance because she worshipped God.

 

In Luke 1:46, we see another example of a person flowing in the river of joy in the prophetic realm. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was filled with joy and filled with the Spirit. Mary was not a prophet, yet she loved God. She worshipped God with this song. She prophesied something about herself when she said, “for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed” (Lk. 1:48).

 

In Luke 1, we see another example of someone flowing in the river of joy—Zechariah. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and was able to prophesy. An angel prophesied to him about the coming of John the Baptist. However, because he doubted the prophetic word of the Angel Gabriel, he has become mute until the time the prophecy has been fulfilled (Lk. 1:20).

 

 

After being mute for months, Zechariah’s heart was filled with joy when he was able to finally speak. He praised God, and the prophecies started to come out of his mouth.

 

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the

Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

to give knowledge of salvation to his people

 by the forgiveness of their sins.

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in

the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” 

(Lk. 1:76-79)

Introducing the Rivers of Prophecy

The rivers of the prophetic realm refer to the flow, the channel, and how the prophetic move of God would flow through our lives. The channeling of prophecy involves the methodology. By degrees, we are referring to the heights by which the “spirit of prophecy” can move into.

 

When it comes to levels, we are pertaining to the strength. For example, when you’re playing a game with different levels, the higher the level the more skilled you need to get. These levels talk about the degrees of strength, by which the “spirit of prophecy” can come upon a person. There are different intensities for different levels. The Spirit, who gives all the spiritual gifts and whom Jesus called the Helper, is the same one whom we call the “Spirit of prophecy.”

In the Book of Revelations, John called Jesus as the “Spirit of prophecy.” The word “testimony” comes from the Greek word maturios and that is the same word where we get the word “witness.” John is saying the testimony of Jesus is the evidence of Jesus Christ. The prophetic word we speak testifies or witnesses to Jesus; it serves as evidence of the power of Jesus. We see a prophetic stream flow from the Book of Genesis to the Book of Revelation. God’s people are considered a prophetic people because the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy.

 

A prophetic word does not necessarily mean it’s a prediction. Prophecy is the Word of God, as God gave it. Looking at the levels and degrees of prophecy allows you to understand that you can move into the ability to make a prediction in your spiritual growth. In Scriptures, the usage of the word prophecy has also been used in its predictive sense.

 

In Luke 22, the guards blindfolded Jesus, slapped and beat him. All the while, they were asking him, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” They were asking Jesus to give a word of knowledge of who did that—a show of omniscience. There is no doubt there is an element of prediction in the prophetic word. There are different degrees of prediction in different degrees of prophecy.

 

Jeremiah and Isaiah delivered the most difficult prophecies in the Old Testament because they spoke about the destruction of Israel, along with a message of comfort. They were also tasked to tell the people to repent. Jeremiah, who was one of the last prophets at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem, was known

as a weeping prophet.

 

Think about it, God carefully and specifically chose a man who was a compassionate tenderhearted man to deliver a message of doom and destruction. Jeremiah’s message in the Book of Lamentations was that his head was in waters and that rivers of tears were flowing from his eyes. The foundation of the Spirit of prophecy was comfort, not condemnation, regardless of the message. The Spirit of prophecy is grounded on edification and exhortation.

 

There is a predictive element in the revelation nature of prophecy. However, the Apostle Paul established in 1 Corinthians 13 that the foundation of each gift and its full development is love. Without love, each gift is incomplete, and can potentially be dangerous to the one who has it and to others. These spiritual gifts may be powerful, but they become nothing if they are not used out of love.

 

Prophecies unfold the mysteries of God before man. The foundation for the gift of prophecy, as well as every other spiritual gift is love. Love always seeks to comfort, to exhort, and to edify others. The seven rivers of prophecies can be understood according to the ways the Spirit of prophecy move. Rivers are available to every person. Understanding the nature of the rivers of prophecy helps you to move easily with the Spirit of God when it comes to prophetic activity, because these are the ways in which the Spirit of prophecy flows.

Recognizing the Prophetic Realm

The prophetic realm is a dimension we can access through the Holy Spirit. We are given access to this realm as believers to help us get to know this big and holy God more personally. The Scriptures tell us that every one of the fivefold ministry gifts of God is designed to equip us for the work of the ministry. Moreover, these gifts are meant to edify us as the Body of Christ. These gifts are also meant to bring us into the unity of faith. These spiritual gifts are supposed to bring us into the knowledge of the Son of God. What’s even more wonderful is they’re designed to make us perfect—which means, to be more like Jesus.

We are to grow up into the fullness of Christ. This process means a lot of immaturity, selfishness, and instability need to be taken out of our system. We also need to speak the truth in love. People in the fivefold ministry ensure that every part of the body does its share and that the body is feeding itself properly.

The prophetic realmis not meant to be mystical, spooky, dangerous, or even unbiblical. These are misconceptions that pushed a lot of believers away from the works of the Holy Spirit. The prophetic realm is an integral part of our growth process as Christians, as are the other four dimensions. The scriptures also imply that we can’t become all that God wants us to be in Christ without the ministry all of us have.

The Key of Prophecy

Jesus Christ is ultimately the grand theme of the Bible. Jesus said, “If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me” (Jn. 5:46). Jesus was promised to Adam and Eve, as the Seed who would crush the serpent’s head (Gen. 3:15). The closing words of the Bible declared that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:10). Prophecy is about Jesus and Jesus is declared through a prophetic word. Jesus IS prophecy—He is God’s main message to humanity. Jesus is the reason why we

prophesy. Jesus is the “key” to prophecy. Even in a personal prophecy, where blessing and purpose is being declared upon an individual, the prophet is still directing this person to Jesus. The prophet is still saying, “This is your destiny in Christ. This is your story, as a part of God’s story.” Personal prophecies are still Jesus-centered prophecies.

 

Jesus’ name is the Word of God (Rev. 19:13). God is a God of order, and the spirit of the Word is not that of confusion, but rather of harmony and unity. We Test Prophetic Words with Scripture

Jesus’ name is the Word of God (Rev. 19:13). God is a God of order, and the spirit of the Word is not that of confusion, but rather of harmony and unity. All points to the Person and work of Jesus Christ. All of the prophecies in the bible point to Jesus Christ.

All of these prophetic words were foundational for discovering who God is. All these biblical prophecies, biblical analogies, bible types are so rooted in Jesus Christ that his existence is the only thing that allow all of these things to make sense.

Prophecy must conform to the Word of God. The basic requirement for a prophetic word is for it to be in harmony with the Bible (1 Jn. 4:1); otherwise, it is from a different source (Gal. 1:6-8). As mentioned previously, a prophetic word must testify to Jesus. Scripture is clear that prophecies should reveal Jesus Christ (Rev. 19:10; 1 Jn. 4:2-3). They should glorify Jesus, not any other person. Third, there is also a moral test that the prophet must pass. Is the person giving the prophecy exhibiting moral character that is consistent with his office and ministry? The prophet must be careful to maintain his prophetic integrity (Mt. 7:15-16). The fruit of people with a rotten heart is rotten. However, the fruit of people who exhibit the fruit of reading the Bible and living it out in their lives is something no one can duplicate.

 

Members of the apostolic team and the Office of the Prophet can judge and measure if a prophecy is really God-given. They have a special anointing for discerning the spirit of a person, and they have the authority to do this.

THE ROLE OF PROPHECY IN THE BIBLE PART 2

In another account, the prophet Micah named Bethlehem (a tiny village) as the birthplace of the Messiah (Mic. 5:2); that was in 700 BC. Do you think they conspired to make this happen?There were four centuries before the crucifixion was even invented when both King David (Ps. 22; 34:20) and the prophet Zechariah (Zec. 12:10) described Christ’s death in perfect depiction and according to this mode of execution. Historians and New Testament writers also confirmed this fulfillment. Jesus of Nazareth died on a Roman cross. Moreover, as predicted, not one of his bones broke. A spear would thrust into his side to verify he was dead.

Another interesting fact is how a group of prophets came out with a united prophetic word. According to eye-witness account, Elijah’s supernatural departure from Earth was predicted unanimously by a group of 50 prophets (2 Kgs. 2:3-11).

 

The company of prophets who were in Bethel came

out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that

today the Lord will take your master away from

you?” And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.”

Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.” (2 Kings 3:3-5)
