Power of Words

  1. H. Robins, well-renowned linguist and author of General Linguistics: An Introductory Survey, cites 3,000 B. C. as the time, which is as far as we can go in linguistic history. Amazingly, this timeframe coincides with when the Babel incident would have happened.1 With such findings and evidence, we can say that what the Bible says about language and the ability that it has is true.

Words have the terrifying power to create and unite, but whether that is for better or worse is up to us. Here we have a group of people united with one goal and vision, and they all speak the same language. The words and sentences they exchanged with each other passed on an idea that was embraced by many.

And yet, for all their teamwork and harmony, the words they exchanged was meant to unite them all against God. Instead of creating something that the Lord can declare as good, they wanted to create something that would make them as if they are God. And so, the Lord decided to mix up the languages of the world, and while the words and intonations vary, the power does not. Used properly as God did in the creation of the universe, we are able to see wonderful things come to pass. Used wrongly, we see entire civilizations come to ruin.+

For truly, as King Solomon said:

4 The words of a person’s mouth are like deep water. But the fountain of wisdom is like a flowing stream.

6 What foolish people say leads to arguing. They are just asking for a beating.

7 The words of foolish people drag them down. They are trapped by what they say.

8 The words of anyone who talks about others are like tasty bites of food.

They go deep down inside you.

20 Because of what they say a person can fill their stomach.

What their words produce can satisfy them. 21 Your tongue has the power of life and death.

Those who love to talk will eat the fruit of their words. (Proverbs 18: 4, 6-8, 20-21)

This is the true extent of what our words are able to create – in any language. All languages are the language of creation; it is a matter of what you say in that language.

In the Beginning

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth didn’t have any shape. And it was empty. There was darkness over the surface of the waves. At that time, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day.” He called the darkness “night.” There was evening, and there was morning. It was day one.

6 God said, “Let there be a huge space between the waters. Let it separate water from water.” 7 And that’s exactly what happened. God made the huge space between the waters. He separated the water under the space from the water above it. 8 God called the huge space “sky.” There was evening, and there was morning. It was day two. (Genesis 1:1-8)

It’s pretty amazing how the first words of the Bible demonstrate to us the power of words and how the mere act of speaking translates into action. For God, in the creation of the universe, it was as easy as saying “let there be,” and so it was. It all began with a word.

We can let our words create not just thoughts, but actions and new possibilities. As such, the story of Babel happened:

The whole world had only one language, and everyone spoke it. 2 They moved to the east and found a broad valley in Babylon. There they made their home.

3 They said to one another, “Come on! Let’s make bricks and bake them well.” They used bricks instead of stones. They used tar to hold the bricks together. 4 Then they said, “Come on! Let’s build a city for ourselves. Let’s build a tower that reaches to the sky. We’ll make a name for ourselves. Then we won’t be scattered over the whole earth.”

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 He said, “All these people are united and speak the same language. That is why they can do all this. Now they will be able to do anything they plan. 7 Come on! Let us go down and mix up their language. Then they will not be able to understand one other.”

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over the whole earth. And they stopped building the city. 9 There the Lord mixed up the language of the whole world. That’s why the city was called Babel. From there the Lord scattered them over the whole earth. (Genesis 11:1-9)

Linguists back this up. There is still mystery surrounding the evolution of language, as there is lack of scientific evidence backing up the claim that all languages came from one language In fact, we can only trace the history of languages only up until around 10,000 years ago, and no further. Following the account of Babel, we can see that from that day stemmed a number of languages that only continued on to develop into the many languages that we have today.

Language: Describing vs. Performing Acts

Language plays an integral part, particularly in social settings. It achieves a responsive flow between or among people, affecting their feelings while getting our points across. It is definitely more complex than just a string of words put together. It aids in showcasing our personality, attitude, opinions, and intentions towards society. We perform these acts by declaring, promising, requesting, offering, assessing, and asserting ourselves.

Classification of Speech Acts

To understand how we are to utilize the ability of speech acts, we must first understand how they are classified according to framework.

We have:

  • The Speech Act of Declaration
  • The Speech Act of Promise
  • The Speech Act of Request
  • The Speech Act of Offer
  • The Speech Act of Assessment
  • The Speech Act of Assertion

Let us dig deeper into the heart of this book, language, and where all these variations came from.

Speech Acts are Language as Actions

With this understanding, we need to realize our ability as human beings to make things happen around us.We have the power to create major shifts not only in the world that we interact in as a whole, but also in our day-to-day lives.Language then becomes something more than just spoken word, but an action.

Speech acts are simply language as a form of action. We perform an action by uttering particular words to showcase our intentions.A basic example would be purchasing something from a store. When you go up to the front of the store, you say, “I’d like to buy this loaf of bread.” By saying these words, you are already performing the speech act of purchasing the bread without having to do any gestures of pointing out the bread.Same goes when a pastor christens a baby.As he pronounces, “I now baptize you in the name of the Father,” he is performing the act as he utters the words.

Even indirect speech acts contain power and result in action. When you say, “It’s very cold in here” to your roommate, then you are, in a sense, doing the speech act of request. It may not be a statement of order and is not necessarily imposing, but it would almost always result in the act of someone adhering to your request, as in this case, your roommate turning off the air conditioner.

Language is more than just a mere utterance of words in order to describe what is already there, but rather, an action that creates a new reality for us.This opens up a refreshing thought that language gives us the freedom to design our own lives.

Language of Creation

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). From the very beginning, language has been evident in the creation of our world, which was also powerfully used to create the first humans on Earth. Although this was spoken by God without any of us being able to hear it, it is still recorded in Scripture as a message to us, to be passed on from generation to generation.Through God’s spoken word came the birth of all creation on Earth, and His children were given the gift of language in order for us to understand His words and communicate with Him in the most miraculous ways.

As a gift, language has become such a powerful tool in the continuous development of our world. It is used to create relationships, start revolutions, and make significant changes in society. It is how we communicate as a civilization that has brought us into the kind of world that we live in today. It is what separates us from all the other creatures created by God. Language enables us to express ourselves in a way that other species cannot. It is how we clearly convey our ideas, thoughts, and feelings. It is quite unfathomable to live a life without language.

Do you faithfully give your tithes and offering?

GOD HAS NOT CHANGED

In Malachi 3:6, God declares, “I the Lord do not change.” A few verses after the Lord declares that people rob Him through tithes and offering, and that they should test Him to see if He would not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing on them. Do you see what He is saying?

Tithes and offering is something that the Lord would always require, even after Jesus’ victory on the cross. The Lord is saying, He does not change, and He requires His portion, and as you obey, you are going to be abundantly blessed. As you test Him in your obedience, specifically by bringing in your tithes and offering, He would still and surely do what He said He would do:

10 Bring the entire tenth to the storerooms in my temple. Then there will be plenty of food. Test me this way,” says the Lord. “Then you will see that I will throw open the windows of heaven. I will pour out so many blessings that you will not have enough room to store them. 11 I will keep bugs from eating up your crops. And your grapes will not drop from the vines before they are ripe,” says the Lord. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed. Your land will be delightful,” says the Lord who rules over all. (Malachi 3:10-12)

There is this story of a pastor who discovered the târumah, when someone gave him a târumah. It was $3 and he knew the man needed it more than he did, but the Lord said to him, “Take it. It’s for him, not for you.” In the same season, this man was blessed with two cars. You don’t need to take my word for it. You can test God when it comes to your târumah, as He said you should.

Going back to this pastor, he asked for forgiveness to God for withholding the târumah out of ignorance. As he prayed for forgiveness, he heard the Lord saying $111. He thought it was a weird amount, but he obeyed and placed it in another pastor’s hand directly. The day after someone went up to him saying, I’m going to give you my house; it needs repairs, but I’m going to give it to you. He spent about $50,000 for repairs. It took him a week to move in, and when he did, it was only then that he realized his house number was Lot 111. He knew God blessed his târumah offering.

God Challenges the People

The Lord commanded them to fulfill their covenant duties. The Lord also said, “bring all the tithe”, which means some people may not be bringing the correct portion to the Lord. They are compromising their faith. As if to motivate the people, the Lord said “test Him and see” if He’d provide for them if they gave.

It’s interesting that the word “test” (ָבּ ַחן ) would have the sense here of proving something, such as testing a new product or a plan. To test God would be an act of faith; and that would be contrary from the wilderness generation who tested God because they did not believe him. Test Him by faith. God was calling the people to act on his promises, to prove them true. God was saying, “obey and see that I am faithful in delivering all that I promised.”

God would open the floodgates of heaven and pour out blessings on them. For what? Just because they brought back what God gave them in the first place? It seemed like a very imbalanced deal, and God was on the short end. God was here calling the people to trust Him, and that they would have to demonstrate their trust by giving Him what is due.

The Punishment for Robbing God

When you do not fulfill the requirements of the covenant, there is punishment. It does not mean that you are not saved by the blood of Jesus, but because you are sinning, by robbing God, the enemy has the legal right to bring harm your way.

God’s grace protects you as long as you obey. Some of God’s promises have clear requirements and when you follow what He asks, then you have access to His hedge of protection.

God withholds his blessing as punishment when people become ungrateful and disloyal. What can evil people do with great resources? Answer: So much damage. When people withhold the tithes and the offering, pride and disobedience are the causes. The withholding of the blessing is actually for the offender.

The Israelites’ answer in itself was indignant. The Lord answered with two nouns — in tithes and offering. The tithe was the regular portion of their income that went to the Lord; and their offering was an additional gift that they were to give, often identified as the priest’s due.88 In the Old Testament, all the giving covered the sanctuary offerings for God, the failure to bring these to God was a clear sign of ingratitude and disloyalty.

The whole land was cursed. The word “curse means “to remove from the place of blessing.” The Bible was not specific as how many disobedient people it takes to bring down a national curse, but this is clearly widespread throughout the land.89 Maybe they were experiencing hardships in rebuilding their nation. However, Malachi would remind them that if they thought keeping their money was the most frugal thing to do for their livelihood, then they needed to understand the covenant terms again. If they gave by faith what was due to God, bountiful provisions would be supplied.

First and foremost, it would rain. Secondly, devouring pests would not come. However, since they failed to trust in God’s provision, there was drought and pests. God was teaching them to depend on Him for the rain and the crops, and when He provided for them to show their gratitude with their tithes and offerings (the tithes would be in proportion to the way God prospered them).

How do you rob me? – God

The Lord answered the Israelites’ inquiry of how they are robbing the Lord and the response is so simple — in your tithes and offering. In other words, the Lord is saying, “you rob me when you do not bring your tithes and offering fully.”86 You may be bringing in your tithe, but if you are not bringing in your offering, then you have not brought what God is asking in full.

The târumah is separate from the tithes, and it is a voluntary offering. It is voluntary in terms of the amount you give.87 If you give less than 1/60th of your increase, on top of the tithe, then you are a stingy man, if it is 1/50th of your increase, then you are fair, but a generous man gives 1/40th or more.

Tithes and Offering Part 2

The offering is traditionally translated as the “heave offering” (Exo. 29:2-28, Lev. 14:32, Num. 15-19-21). It is found 76 times in the Hebrew Bible, mostly in Exodus, Numbers, and Ezekiel, which is usually related to the causative verb rûm, “be high,” which suggested it’s raised as an offering to the Lord. The târumah, as we have been discussing, is a contribution for the ministry of the Lord. It goes directly for the personal consumption of the priest. Moreover, the târumah is the setting aside an object from the owner’s domain to transfer it to God’s domain, as an act of dedication.84

The connection between the târumah and the tithe is suggested in Numbers 18:8-24. The offerings were reserved for the priests, since he was giving them no land to farm. All the târumah brought to the Lord, the portions of grain, and the like were not burnt. There is also a portion of the tithes that was designed to the Levites for the same reason. Not all of the tithes went to the priests’ direct consumption, because they needed resources to keep the temple running. The târumah comes in different amounts, unlike the tithe which is a fixed 10%. The târumah depends on the generosity of the person, which the most generous gives 2.5% or more of his increase. The târumah is not the tithe, but the tithe is a kind of târumah.

God said that the Israelites were withholding offerings that belonged to Him, especially the tithes.85 In the present time, a portion of the tithes is allotted for the salary of the priest, as other parts of it go to building rent, utilities, and the like. On the other hand, there are other offerings, which is entirely given to the priest for his nourishment and support. It is important to recognize if you are failing to bring your târumah, even when you are faithfully bringing in your tithe.

The Bible says if you fail to bring your târumah, then you are still robbing the Lord.

Have you ever withheld a tithe? How about an offering?

Tithes and Offering

The way the Israelites treated the land of Canaan — the promised land — was a central feature in their responsibilities under God’s covenant. Ownership of land meant participation in the covenant community to whom God had given the land. The ownership of land is legitimized by an attitude of faith and gratitude for God. Covenant terms included keeping the Sabbath, and participation in the festivals of joy with gifts to God. A significant portion of this responsibility is bringing in the tithe and the offering through which the landless priests and Levites are provided for. The land the priests and Levites received were not farming lands, but residential areas. Therefore, they cannot work for their provision.

The condition of the covenant was given so that they cannot pridefully think, “My own power and strength produced this wealth for me.” Through tithes and offering, the people remember that it is God who gives them the ability to produce wealth, in order to confirm His covenant with them (Dt. 8:17-18). Their obedience to this requirement shows their acknowledgement of His Lordship over them, as well as their dependence and gratitude toward them.

Moreover, this practice also shows the people how faithful God has been to His promises.

Tithe is maʾăśēr, meaning “tenth part.”83 If tithes is maʾăśēr, and offering is târumah, then the Hebrew translation already distinguishes that the tithe is not the offering. Moses instructed Israel to bring in “A tenth of everything the land produces belongs to the Lord. That includes grain from the soil and fruit from the trees. It is holy. It is set apart for him” (Lev. 27:30). When Israel settled into the land, they were already required to bring in the tithe. Every third year, however, the tithe was specifically distributed to the offeror’s hometown, to its local landless inhabitants, such as the foreign residents, the Levites, the fatherless, and the widows (Dt. 14:28-29; 26:12).
